Somali referee barred from U.S. World Cup entry returns to Mogadishu
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was due to officiate at the World Cup, has been denied entry to the United States following an 11-hour immigration interview, despite holding a valid visa.
The Somali Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, said it had facilitated his travel and issued him a diplomatic passport to help avoid visa-related complications.
Artan travelled from Kenya, transiting through Turkey before arriving in Miami, where he was refused entry at Miami International Airport and sent back.
The incident comes as Somalia is included on President Donald Trump's travel ban list.
