The former Defence Secretary who ordered a key inquiry into the Chinook helicopter disaster has told this programme he may have been misled by the Ministry of Defence over the 1994 crash on the Mull of Kintyre. All 29 people on board were killed, including many of the UK's top Northern Ireland intelligence specialists. Senior RAF commanders overruled their own inquiry to blame the pilots for the crash, but that was overturned in 2011 by a judge led inquiry ordered by Sir Liam Fox. 32 years on, Sir Liam says new evidence raises “deep concerns.” He told Channel 4 News evidence which has emerged since the Mull of Kintyre Review raises “deep concerns” that “vital information may have been withheld from ministers and parliament” and that information provided by the MoD “on the airworthiness of the aircraft was not correct.” With files relating to the crash sealed for 100 years, as is standard practise for Ministry of Defence documents, families are now calling for an independent inquiry. The MoD said: “Our thoughts and sympathies remain with the families, friends, and colleagues of all those who died in the Mull of Kintyre crash. “The Chinook Justice Campaign submitted a formal claim for Judicial Review in September 2025, and the MOD is focused on responding to that claim and to the allegations it contains. The MOD continues to engage with the CJC throughout this process but we will not be offering comment on issues that are being considered as part of that independent process.” #Chinook #UK #Channel4News ♬ original sound - Channel 4 News - undefined
