Gardaí scam warning issued against fake National Economic Crime Bureau fraudsters
An Garda Síochána have issued an alert for a new scam.Gardaí said that a scam in the form of advertisements on social media has duped people into handing over personal details by posing as members of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau. The fraudsters try to extract people's bank account details and attempt to get people to pay false fees whole posing as figures of authority.Gardaí warned that if personal or banking details are handed over, the scammers may be able to access and steal money from the victim."Scam Alert" said Gardaí in a Facebook warning. "We have become aware of fraudulent social media advertising, purporting to be from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau."The purpose of these ads is to get people’s bank account and other personal data and then once the victim is engaging with the fraudsters, the victim could be asked to pay a fee or may receive a phone call where other personal data is sought and the fraudsters then steal more from the victim."If you believe you’ve engaged with such a scam, please contact your local Garda station."Established in 1995, the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau is a national unit that investigates serious financial crimes, corruption, and foreign bribery.
