Swindon Town season 'a disaster' after missing playoffs

Having spent 39 of the 46 weeks of the season inside the top seven, it was when it counted that Swindon dropped out and failed to at least extend their chance at promotion into May. A strong first half of the season saw them sitting second as late as February 20, but an end to the season that saw just one win in seven had them fall out of the playoffs entirely. Ian Holloway said that he felt he had let everyone down after the end of the season, and his team ended up “not good enough.” George Elek of the Not The Top 20 podcast discussed the season after the 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield, and said that their struggling form finally caught up with them. He said: “For Swindon, it is a total disaster, really. They finished ninth after having been in the automatic promotion race a couple of weeks ago. “A funny team where earlier in the season their record against the worst teams was so strong, but they could never really get past the better teams. “For your manager to go on TalkSport ahead of what is still an incredibly important game, where if you win, you know you are going to be in the top seven, and to say, ‘the wheels have fallen off’ is actually ridiculous. “If I were a Swindon fan, I would be pretty upset to hear that, unless it was an attempt to work some kind of reverse psychology to stop trying to get them up for it and let them get themselves up for it. “One win dating back to the end of March, three defeats in their last four games, and they conceded 11 goals in those four games. “It has been a shambolic ending to what looked like quite a promising season, but, as I mentioned, the underlying numbers for a while have been on the slide, their reliance on Drinan for goals, and there were a lot of points won in February-March time when they weren’t very good, weren’t better than the opposition and were winning anyway. “When that is the case, you either have to improve to maintain it, or it is probably going to catch up with you. In this case, it caught up with them.”
