Burke to remain in prison, following High Court appearance
Enoch Burke will remain in prison, after saying he was not trespassing at his one-time workplace
The jailed schoolteacher has today refused to purge his contempt of a court order, banning him from Wilson’s Hospital School.
Mr. Burke appeared before the High Court earlier via video link and was offered an opportunity to purge his contempt of court, allowing him to leave prison.
This latest development comes four years to the month since the dispute first began, when he was suspended from his position in the Westmeath School.
Burke was suspended following on from incidents arising from a request from the school’s principal (at the time) to address a student by a new name or pronoun, and later dismissed from his role.
He has spent over 650 days in prison as a result of court order violations.
Earlier in the High Court, Mr. Justice Brian Cregan told Mr. Burke “you know perfectly well that you are in breach of a High Court order”.
This came after Burke told the court “I shouldn’t be in prison, I should be in my classroom”.
He was reminded he could be released from prison at any stage as long as he committed to stay away from the school.
