COVID-19 spring booster campaign launches across England
Health officials say those most at risk of severe illness from COVID-19 are being encouraged to take up a spring booster, with appointments now available without waiting for an official invite.
The latest advice targets adults aged 75 and over, residents in care homes for older adults, and individuals aged six months and above with weakened immune systems.
COVID-19 continues to circulate throughout the year, and immunity from previous infection or vaccination can reduce over time, according to the NHS. The current strain of the virus can also change, meaning additional protection is recommended for those at higher risk.
Matthew Dominey, consultant in public health and screening and immunisation lead for NHS England South West, said: “COVID-19 is still a serious disease and can be dangerous to those most at risk.
“Make sure you top up your protection against COVID-19 by getting vaccinated this spring if you are eligible.
“Those at increased risk from severe illness can get the vaccine, including those aged 75 or over, people with a weakened immune system or who live in an older adult care home.”
He added: “Appointments can be booked straight away, and are available at local pharmacies, GP practices and at walk-in clinics.
“The first appointments will be taking place from Monday, April 13, but don’t get caught out, book your appointment before the end of June to make sure you’re protected this spring.”
The spring vaccination programme runs until Tuesday, June 30, with the final day to book appointments on Monday, June 29.
Eligible people can arrange a vaccination through the NHS App, online at www.nhs.uk/get-vaccination, by calling 119, or by attending a walk-in site listed at www.nhs.uk/covid-walk-in.
Further information about the COVID-19 vaccine is available at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccine.
In some locations, those eligible for both the RSV and COVID-19 vaccines may be able to receive both at the same appointment.
