Gov. Mike Braun signs bill banning the use of bitcoin ATMS in Indiana
INDIANA (WFIE) - Governor Mike Braun ceremonially signed an emergency declaration banning the use of bitcoin ATMS in the state of Indiana. According to a post made by the Evansville Police Department, the EPD Financial Crimes Unit reached out to Rep. Wendy McNamara about state legislation for bitcoin ATMS being used by scammers. Officials say Recp McNamara, with assistance from AARP, built off of an Evansville city ordinance and enacted stronger measures to restrict the use of the machines. EPD says the number of scams in Evansville have doubled each year, with an average loss of $11,000. They say when state legislators heard testimony from the EPD unit, AARP and other organizations, they decided to authorize a full ban on bitcoin ATMS. House Bill 1116 “prohibits the operation of virtual currency kiosks in Indiana.”The emergency declaration was put into affect March 9, and was ceremonially signed by Gov. Mike Braun April 29.Gov.
