Each year, five nature lovers take on the challenge of designing a stunning home garden worthy of going to Bord Bia Bloom, Ireland's premier garden show.
With just three weeks and a budget that amounts to €15,000, each designer takes over one garden in a new social housing estate – their blank canvas – to make something that will impress the judges.
This year's location is Millrace in Ashbourne, County Meath, a new social housing development by Meath County Council. Five families, who had just moved into their new homes, had the privilege of seeing their gardens transformed for the competition.
This year's expert panel of judges are: Brian Burke, representing Woodie's, who is a previous Super Garden winner; Kerrie Gardiner, Bord Bia Bloom's Show Gardens Manager; Carol Marks, Manager of Horticulture Bord Bia; and Monica Alvarez, a garden design lecturer also representing Dulux.
Tonight's episode introduced viewers to Balbriggan woman Janani, who started out as a software engineer. Eventually, her passion for plants took over, and for the last 12 years, she has been gardening in India and now in Ireland.
She runs a terrarium (garden in a bottle) business, but she has bigger ambitions, having completed a Level 6 Landscape Design and Construction Course with Teagasc.
Janani is now scaling up from miniature to the real thing and hoping that her participation in Super Garden will bring her to Bloom and help her establish her new garden design business.
On tonight's show, Janani was challenged to create a beautiful garden for Diana, a single mother of a young boy with a neurological condition, meaning that more time outside would really benefit him.
Diana is dreaming of a super social garden that will allow for BBQs, relaxing and playing, while her son wants "lots of plants".
In response, Janani designed an impressive garden inspired by the Irish landscape, complete with rolling hills and a mountain stream. She even painted the large stone wall with a gorgeous mural inspired by nature.
Judge Brian Burke applauded Janani's strong concept, while Monica Alvarez complimented the flow created within the space.
