The Indo Daily: Daniel Kinahan’s secret alias? How Gardai tracked ‘Bon’ linked to Irish murder plots
The law has finally caught up with crime boss Daniel Kinahan, who is now awaiting extradition from the UAE after a decade on the run. The man at the center of the deadly Kinahan-Hutch feud is sitting in a Dubai jail cell, facing the prospect of trial in Dublin’s Special Criminal Court. The 48-year-old gang leader is wanted in this country to face a string of organised-crime charges which, on conviction, could lead to him spending the rest of his life behind bars. The Irish Independent can reveal that this includes a plot to murder Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch in Lanzarote, Spain, on December 31, 2015, with Kinahan alleged to have been in direct contact with a hit team dispatched to kill his arch rival.Evidence was also previously given in the prosecution of several cartel criminals who conspired to murder senior Hutch associate James ‘Mago’ Gately in April 2017. Estonian hitman Imre Arakas had been in contact with a number of individuals on an encrypted messaging app on a Blackberry device in the days before his arrest in west Dublin. They were helping him in identifying Gately and his Belfast hideout. One of the conspirators used the handle ‘Bon’, which gardaí have always suspected was an alias Kinahan operated under, with the Gately murder plot also expected to form part of the case against him.Today on the Indo Daily Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Irish Independent Security Correspondent Robin Schiller and Bellingcat researcher Connor Plunkett to explore Daniel Kinahan’s hidden alias, and what fate may await the notorious cartel leader.
