Dublin Fire Brigade have issued a warning after an e-scooter caused a fire that blocked residents escape route.The fire service has issued a number of warnings about charging e-bikes and e-scooters. In a new post they shared an incident where a an e-scooter was left charging in the common area of a residential building.The battery caught fire, and the location of the e-scooter then hampered the escape route of residents. The fire led to a number of floors of the building being filled with smoke.DFB emphasized that e-bikes and e-scooters should be kept outside. The batteries of these devices can pose a fire risk even when they are not left on charge."We really can't stress this enough. The safest place for these devices is outside" they said, sharing snapshots from the aftermath of the fire."Never charge in common areas. This one was left on charge in a common area and resulted in several floors being smoke logged, hampering residents escape route."The risk of fire can also be lowered by ensuring you are purchasing a quality product. When buying an e-scooter, e-bicycle or hoverboard:Ensure it has a genuine CE mark - you can find information on identifying genuine CE marks on the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission's website.Examine the packaging for traceable information, such as the manufacturer's name and contact details.Return the product if the instruction manual is missing, not in English or contains spelling/grammar errors.Get second-hand devices inspected by a reputable technician as you won't know its history.If your e-scooter, e-bike or hoverboard catches fire, you should:Safely unplug the charger if possible.Shut the door to the room or flat where the fire is.
