Norse Atlantic axes flights from Gatwick to Los Angeles
Norse Atlantic offers several flight routes from the Sussex airport to locations such as New York, Orlando, Bangkok and Cape Town.
Another one of its popular routes was flights to Los Angeles, but this has now been axed by the airline.
The decision comes due to the rise in fuel prices as a result of the ongoing war in Iran.
The Norse Atlantic flights from the UK to LA were first launched in June 2023.
When it was first launched, the budget airline operated seven flights per week from Gatwick to the American city.
This year, it had planned to operate six flights per week for the peak summer months.
However, now all flights to LA with Norse are being cancelled until October.
"Due to the continued increase in fuel constraint risks, fuel prices, and the resulting impact on our operating costs, we have had to make the difficult decision to suspend our LAX operations this summer, May to October," a spokesman told Travel Gossip.
"All affected customers will be proactively notified by Norse Atlantic Airways today, where contact details are available."
It is not the only airline having to axe flights recently, with KLM already announcing that it is axing flights across Europe over the next month, including services to and from London.
The Dutch airline says the cancellations are not down to a kerosene shortage, although the country’s airline industry association, BARIN, has previously warned that fuel supplies could become a concern as the conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel rumbles on and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
In total, it plans to cut 160 flights, split equally between departures from and arrivals into Schiphol Airport.
These are effectively round‑trip pairings and amount to around 1% of the airline’s European schedule.
The airline said: Passengers affected by these changes will be rebooked onto the next available flight.
"As these are destinations KLM serves multiple times a day, such as London and Düsseldorf, travellers can usually be accommodated quickly."
It continued: “KLM expects a busy May holiday period and is making sure passengers can travel to their holiday destinations as planned.”
