Another Irish pub will close its doors before summer after 25 years

Another hugely popular restaurant and pub is set to shut up shop after being in business for a quarter of a century. Restaurants and bars seem to be closing their doors every single day in Ireland, and this latest announcement of closure from Cox’s Bar and Restaurant in Castlebar, County Mayo, has come as a shock to the local population. In a statement on social media, Cox’s said it will close its doors for good before the summer. Cox’s Bar and Restaurant Castlebar – Pic – Facebook Owners Paul and Helen Doyle said the venue had become much more than just a place to eat and drink to the local community, becoming a central part of the lives of many local people. They thanked their customers for all the memorable experiences over the years and for the relationships built over 25 years. In their statement, Paul and Helen Doyle said, ‘This decision was not taken lightly. Despite our best efforts, the prolonged difficulties in the current trading environment have made it impossible to sustain the business. It is a conclusion we reached only after exhausting all alternatives, and we are deeply grateful for the loyalty and goodwill that have been shown to us throughout.’ Ireland’s hospitality industry is facing a deepening crisis, with hundreds of restaurants and cafés closing permanently every year, while new openings remain concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities without replacement businesses. Some of the customers of Cox’s have been leaving messages on their Facebook post: ‘A sad day for Castlebar, the food was always fabulous and the staff, best of luck. Paul & Helen will be missed. ‘Very sad. I worked there back in the day, and my suggestion to start a late bar on a Monday night was taken on board. It worked so well that it was extended to other days. The reason I suggested it is really hilarious when you think about it. It was to create a night out for the town’s weekend bar staff. Why? Because if someone fancied a bartender working over the weekend, they knew where to find them on Monday.’
