THE MUMMY Review: Lee Cronin Embraces His EVIL DEAD Era For Universal Monster Remix - Nightmare on Film Street

I don’t care what the title says, I don’t care what the IMDB synopsis says, I don’t care what your mama says; Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) is an Evil Dead movie. This is not a mummy movie. This is, hands down, an Evil Dead movie that Lee Cronin has tricked us into thinking is a Universal Monster movie. And I am totally fine with that.I’ve been saying this since the teaser trailer was first released, and my wild theories were completely vindicated last night at my local multiplex. Even in those early trailers, we saw rosary beads snaking up a grandmother’s arm like it’s the vines in the forest of Raimi’s infamous cabin in the woods. There were haunted looking children with eerie smiles, a young girl vomiting blood & black stuff, not to mention our teenage mummy saying crepy Deadite certified dialogue like “It’s fun to be dead hehehehe“.I see you Mr. Cronin I see what you’re doing. But also, thank you so much for bringing some that wild Evil Dead energy to one of the Universal Monsters that I think is sometimes a little bit of a snoozer. I’m not the biggest mummy fan, in general, but there’s plenty of great gore in this new mommy movie including some really gross gore gags. There were a couple scenes in this movie that made people in my audience squeal like little babies! …..Okay, fine, It was me. I was squealing like a little baby watching that funky Mummy girl lick people’s toes. I’m squirming in my seat right now, just thinking about it.I’m a big fan of filmmakers that take big swings in their movies, especially when those big swings are coming at me in a remake or a reboot. We’ve all seen a lot of mummy movies. We all know how they work, we know the template. But we haven’t necessarily seen a mummy movie with a child in it before. Or for that matter, a mummy that isn’t 100% a dead person.New Line CinemaLee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) is a good night at the movies. If you have the opportunity to see this one while It’s playing in the movie theater, I recommend it, simply because the audience is gonna go nuts for a few key sequences and you definitely want to be there to hear them react. If you were a huge fan of Evil Dead Rise, you already know what kind of insanity Lee Cronin can bring to a scare sequence. Sure, it’s not a perfect movie and it REALLY where it’s influences on its sleeve (we haven’t even touched it’s dual obsession with The Exorcist), but there’s plenty going on in this mummy flick that you haven’t seen before and some great scare sequences. It’s gory, it’s kooky, it has a Looney Tunes style energy to it, and it’s hella violent. Everything you’re looking for in a new Evil Dead movie Mummy movie.Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) is in theatres now!
