China has pressed the start button on what is believed to be the world’s longest outdoor escalator system on the steep banks of the Yangtze River, in a mountainous region known for pushing the bounds of architecture.⁠ ⁠ The 'Goddess' escalator project in Wushan, a county in China’s western Chongqing municipality, stands out for its ambition even in a country where vast infrastructure has become ubiquitous.
