DC Officially Reveals New Supergirl Costume, And Fans Are Either Going to Love It or Hate It
Supergirl fans may be in for a shock with the hero’s latest redesign, which is a complete overhaul of her typical look, giving her a darker and far more hardcore appearance than Kara Zor-El has ever sported. This isn’t just a costume change. It’s a total body-altering transformation with a healthy dose of body horror, so be warned.
DC has officially released a four-page preview for Sophie Campbell and Tamra Bonvillain’s upcoming April 8, 2026, issue of Supergirl #12. From this sneak peek, it’s clear that the issue picks up where the previous one left off, with Kara mortally wounded during her confrontation with Black Flame (Zora Vi-Lar). Issue #11 ended on a cliffhanger that left fans wondering about Kara’s fate. Now, that fate has been revealed, and it comes with Supergirl’s boldest and perhaps most divisive look to date.
Supergirl Goes Full Cyborg in Radical New Redesign
Comic Pages Come from Sophie Campbell and Tamra Bonvillain’s Supergirl #12 (2026)
In Supergirl #12, Kara regains consciousness after the life-threatening injuries she sustained during her fight with Black Flame. She awakens under the care of Kim-Da, who is presumably a Kandorian healthcare professional. The doctor greets Kara and informs her that they “had to take drastic measures to save [her] life.” Visually, readers are treated to a full reveal of Supergirl’s new form, which sees the majority of her body replaced with cybernetics, turning her into a full-blown cyborg, similar to DC’s Victor Stone. Kara appears to be missing her left eye, arm, and leg, while parts of her right leg and arm have also been replaced by cybernetics.

DC Officially Debuts Supergirl’s Radical New Design
After 67 years, Supergirl may be on the verge of a costume change as iconic as Superman’s Black Recovery Suit. Yes, it's that big of a change.
Her remaining flesh shows the aftermath of her injuries, with gnarly scarring surrounding her replaced eye and stitches along the left side of her skull, where her hair has been shaved. Another consequence of her cybernetics is that she no longer wears her classic red, blue, and yellow Supergirl costume. Like Victor Stone, Kara’s “hero look” now primarily consists of her grey metal cybernetic body. However, the doctors managed to incorporate her “S” shield into the design, which serves as the only familiar element of Supergirl’s new appearance. While this is undoubtedly a bold reinvention, it’s not the first time Supergirl has gone full cyborg.
This Isn't the First Time Kara Zor-El Has Been Turned into a Cyborg
Comic Page Comes from Supergirl: Future's End #1 (2014)
Supergirl Future's End #1
In 2014, during DC’s controversial New 52 era, the company ran a crossover crisis event titled Future’s End. In Supergirl: Future’s End, readers saw a future in which Supergirl was a cyborg. There was even a period in the 1970s when Supergirl was a cyborg. Thus, while this new Kara redesign in Supergirl #12 isn’t wholly unique, it stands out given that it is a part of the main continuity. It's likely this look will not last long. Therefore, most fans will appreciate the redesign for spicing up the Supergirl narrative and adding a layer of body-horror trauma to Kara’s character history, which now counts as canon. However, some fans might not embrace Supergirl's new cyborg appearance, especially since DC has recently leaned heavily into body horror in its Absolute Universe titles, which could make this design feel repetitive. Supergirl #12 from DC Comics is available on April 8, 2026!
