Child rapist found dead minutes after being seen at HMP Isle of Wight

The inquest into the death of David Robert Stingemore, 71, was opened at the IW Coroner’s Court in Newport on Friday, March 20. Mr Stingemore had been serving an 18-year prison term for child sex offences in the 1980s when his sentence was extended by six years in 2023 for further shocking abuse against girls in Scarborough. The court heard that Mr Stingemore, originally from Cardiff, was seen by prison staff, in his bed, presumed alive, at 6.40pm on March 6. However, just seven minutes later, staff returned and discovered he had died. A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Adnan Al-Badri on March 19 was unable to determine a cause of death. His death has been provisionally recorded as “unascertained, pending further laboratory investigations.” Coroner Caroline Sumeray set a provisional inquest date for September 21.
