DART to extend services to Kilcock in Co Kildare

DART services are to be extended to Kilcock in Co Kildare as part of Irish Rail's expansion plan. The news comes as a public consultation has also opened on a plan to build a new depot at the town. The new depot could house a fleet of up to 750 carriages, and would be scheduled to open in 2031. Irish Rail says it is also planning on upgrading Kilcock Station with a new platform and second line of track connecting it to Maynooth. Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien said that over 50 sites for the new depot were looked at and assessed, with an area just west of Kilcock selected as the preferred option. He described the town as a "big commuter area" but added that it "does have public transport deficiencies". The proposed new DART network map CEO of Irish Rail Mary Considine said it is expected that DART services will run at 10-minute frequency at the station at peak times, and will "significantly enhance the public transport offering". Currently, the station is served by nine trains each way daily, which go hourly at peak times. Ms Considine added that intercity services would continue to serve the station. The public consultation will be open until 27 April.
