Friday The 13th Creator Strikes Again With Franchise's Newest Slasher Film

Friday the 13th fans may have a reason to celebrate as the iconic horror franchise's co-creator revealed that another film is on the way. Friday the 13th is arguably one of the most recognizable and iconic slasher franchises of all time. Spanning 12 films released between 1980 and 2009, the film series follows Jason Voorhees, a masked killer who hunts down teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake. His murder spree was mainly caused by his mother’s actions in the original film. Over the course of the franchise, his killings extend beyond the campgrounds, including confrontations in space and a crossover with Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. One of the creators of Friday the 13th, Sean Cunningham, confirmed to TMZ that an “old school” Jason movie is on the way. While he remained vague about the details, he seemed to be optimistic that the recent merger between Warner Bros. and Paramount could help move the project forward. He explained that both studios hold rights to the franchise, which was the main point of contention. However, that won't be a problem anymore. Additionally, Cunningham stated that he would prefer to hire a younger writer. He explained that the core of the Friday the 13th franchise has always revolved around “the fear of untimely death,” and it would be interesting to see how a new generation of creators would capture that. The 84-year-old creator further elaborated that at his age, he no longer has that outlook on life, and that fear is more common among the younger generations. Cunningham also revealed that he would be more of a supporter of the project and would serve as an executive producer if the film moves forward. If this film comes to fruition, it would be the first Friday the 13th film in nearly two decades. The last film was a reboot that released in 2009 and received very underwhelming reviews. Despite the franchise being so popular and having a loyal fanbase, the remake still failed to impress critics and casual audiences alike. There is currently no confirmed release date for a new Friday the 13th movie, as the project hasn't been officially greenlit yet. Release Date May 9, 1980 Runtime 95 minutes Director Sean S. Cunningham Writers Victor Miller Betsy Palmer Mrs. Voorhees
