The new model moves the brand into the large SUV sector for the first time, with prices starting from £34,205 when it arrives in UK showrooms. The MGS9 PHEV uses MG’s existing plug-in hybrid technology already seen in the MG HS. The system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 24.7kWh battery, allowing the car to travel up to 62 miles on electric power alone. There’s no word yet on what the overall petrol/electric combined range might be, but that electric-only range means many drivers could complete everyday journeys such as commuting or school runs without using the petrol engine.open image in galleryThe MGS9 promises 62 miles of EV-only driving from its plug-in hybrid powertrain (MG)The MGS9 PHEV is up against one tough rival in particular, the Chery Tiggo 8, which also offers seven-seat practicality with plug-in hybrid tech. The Tiggo 8 will go for 56 miles on electric power and claims up to 750 miles in total. It also undercuts the MG with a starting price of £33,545.The new MG has been designed to prioritise practicality, with three rows of seats giving space for up to seven passengers. The rear-most seats can be folded away when not needed to reveal more than 1,000 litres of luggage space. Even when all seven seats are in use there is still 332 litres of boot space available.David Allison, MG UK’s director of product and planning, said: “The launch of the MGS9 PHEV represents a significant milestone for MG, marking our entry into the seven-seat SUV segment and further strengthening our position in the large SUV market.”“As a vehicle that is both longer and taller than the MG HS, the all-new MGS9 PHEV delivers enhanced presence and versatility, offering the flexibility of a third row to meet the evolving needs of modern families and lifestyle-driven customers.”MG says the new model will also offer a generous level of standard equipment. Features include dual 12.3in HD screens, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, leather-style upholstery, a large panoramic sunroof and powered seats that are heated, ventilated and feature a massage function. The car is also fitted with tri-zone air conditioning designed to keep passengers comfortable across all three rows.Allison added: “Combining an excellent electric range and strong efficiency with an elevated level of specification and refinement, the all-new MGS9 PHEV continues MG’s commitment to delivering accessible innovation and exceptional value within a highly competitive seven-seat SUV segment.”Safety is a focus with the MGS9 PHEV already awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, while there are also up to 16 driver assistance technologies on board. The MGS9 PHEV is available to order now, with full specification details expected to be confirmed later this month as the first cars arrive in MG dealerships across the UK.
