Cranfield-backed EarthScale opens applications for second climate tech cohort

Cranfield University is backing the return of EarthScale, a UK-wide climate tech programme designed to help high-growth ventures scale, strengthen manufacturing and raise Series A investment. Applications are now open for cohort 2 of EarthScale, a 12-month initiative supporting IP-rich climate tech businesses working towards net zero and long-term sustainability. The programme targets ventures at technology readiness levels 5–6 that have already secured seed funding and are preparing for significant growth. Led by Imperial College London and co-funded by the Research England Development Fund, EarthScale brings together six universities — Imperial, Cranfield, Derby, Exeter, Leeds and Nottingham — to create a connected national ecosystem for climate tech and sustainability innovation. Participants gain access to advanced laboratories, specialist manufacturing facilities and technical expertise across the UK. Innovation vouchers support prototyping and research access, while legal guidance helps founders manage intellectual property and manufacturing compliance. Phil Longhurst, Professor and Director of Theme for Transport and Energy at Cranfield University, said the programme is designed to remove barriers that often prevent promising ventures from scaling. “Pooling resources and expertise through EarthScale will help create the right environment for climate startups to thrive,” he said. “This initiative offers the targeted support needed to take promising prototypes to market-ready solutions that support net zero and long-term sustainability.” Karen Parks, EarthScale Cranfield Hub Manager, said the second cohort will strengthen the UK’s climate tech pipeline. “EarthScale is built to scale the UK’s most promising climate tech ventures,” she said. “Through our regional hubs, including Cranfield University, we are creating a powerful, connected ecosystem that supports innovation, sustainability and long-term economic growth.” Alongside technical support, EarthScale delivers tailored enterprise development. Founders receive one-to-one investment readiness coaching, introductions to investors and corporate partners, and workshops covering financial modelling and non-dilutive funding. As a result, businesses are better positioned to secure Series A backing. The programme also focuses on leadership and talent. Ventures can access peer coaching, recruitment support and executive development guidance, helping founders build resilient teams and strong company cultures. In addition, EarthScale provides structured engagement with policymakers and expert advice on certifications, procurement systems and regulatory compliance. This support is intended to accelerate commercial traction for climate tech solutions operating in complex markets.
