Restaurant accused of 'grubby' behaviour after customer notices multiple surcharges on their bill
A restaurant customer has been left furious after being hit with multiple surcharges on a single receipt after buying their food. The bill for the unnamed business sparked outrage after it was shared to Reddit. It showed a weekend surcharge of $8.57, but then also a public holiday surcharge of $11.60, and a card surcharge of $1.60.The poster said he wasn't suggesting surcharges should or should not exist, but that it seemed unfair to be docked with three amounting to $21.77 in addition to the $72.50 bill for the food. They said having both the weekend and public holiday surcharge was curious. 'I may be mistaken, but it's my belief that employees will get paid the highest penalty rate for a day, so if a public holiday falls on a weekend, they get the higher rate for that shift and they don't stack,' they said. 'If that's the case why is this place charging for both? That seems grubby to me.' Many Aussies agreed with them, with one person saying it was 'a bloody outrage'. 'Workers don't get public holiday and weekend penalties stacked, so a business shouldn't charge you both. Disgusting behaviour.' another wrote. A customer has lashed out at a shop after spotting multiple surcharges on a single receipt.'Weekend surcharge is ridiculous at this point, especially for Saturdays,' a third commented. 'Price transparency is needed. They should just raise the prices in the menu. This is dishonesty,' a fourth wrote. 'I guess they only want one-time customers. Not everyone knows how to run a business,' someone wrote. Many commenters also questioned the legality of applying multiple surcharges to the same purchase, but according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), this is allowed. The ACCC also states that 'the words 'A surcharge of [percentage] applies on [day or days]' must appear on the menu and must be at least as prominent as the most prominent price on the menu.'Consumers should be made aware of any weekend and public holiday surcharges that may apply before they decide to order or purchase products from restaurants and cafes. 'If the menu does not list prices, information about these surcharges must be displayed in some other prominent way'. The receipt also showed a card surcharge of $1.60, bring the total of the whole purchase to $94.27.
