AHL round-up: Westmeath too strong in Ruislip
There were just two games beneath the top two tiers on Sunday, with Westmeath accounting for the challenge of London in Ruislip, while Meath edged out Derry in Trim.
Kevin O'Brien's side were always in charge in West London, first half goals from Eamon Cunneen and Dean Ennis putting them into a substantial 2-14 to 0-07 at the break.
While London started well in the second half, Ennis's second goal in the 41st minute essentially settled the contest. Westmeath managed the game from there, running out 3-22 to 0-20 winners to sit on five points after three games in Division 2, one point behind leaders Laois.
In Trim, Meath overturned a eight-point half-time deficit to overcome Derry by two points. Derry keeper Sean Kelly scored a penalty - and saved one late on - to help the visitors into an eight-point advantage at the break, leading 1-12 to 0-07.
Lorcan Byrne's 50th minute goal was a key moment for the hosts, bringing it back to a three-point game entering the final quarter. They gradually chipped away at the lead in a tense last 15 minutes, missing a chance to go in front when Kelly produced a penalty save in the 69th minute.
Their goalkeeper Gavin King finally put them in front with a long-range free with one minute of injury-time gone. And it was the goalscorer Byrne who rounded off the game as Meath grabbed their second win of the campaign on a 1-20 to 1-18 scoreline.
