Commissioned by Tate Modern and supported by Arts Council England, the series was produced by fynn studio and spans documentary, portrait and music-led works connecting nightlife, heritage and community.
The release is led by a new film with Nia Archives, timed to coincide with Rio Carnival, followed by three further shorts profiling figures across security work, DJ culture and image-making.
Baianá (Bonde Re-Edit)
Accompanying unseen footage from the music video for her 2022 single, Baianá, this film follows the Yorkshire artist from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to Manchester, tracing a personal journey through dance, place and the realities of being a female creative. The film is narrated and partly shot by the artist herself, blending documentary moments with performance and street scenes.
Lost Property
This film reframes nightlife through the eyes of a Black queer security guard. Narrated by its subject and built around hundreds of photographs, the film captures the overlooked labour and quiet intimacy of guarding the dance floor.
The Beat
Directed by Daisy Gaston, The Beat pairs 16mm visuals with reflections from Karen Nyame KG on rhythm, heritage and femme identity. The collaboration merges performance, dance and analogue textures to explore the enduring pull of sound system culture.
#friendsonfilm
Marking ten years of the #friendsonfilm photo series, Bernice Mulenga reflects on documenting contemporary Black queer life in Britain. The short intercuts photography with fragments of conversation between Mulenga and close collaborators, forming a time capsule of community and memory.
fynn studio has previously curated rave exhibitions at Saatchi Gallery and 180 Studios in London, as well as The Warehouse Project in Manchester and FACT in Liverpool. Exclusively premiered on RA, the move/008 film series celebrates the importance of community and the energy of dance floors.
