Man charged with assault arising from Dún Laoghaire incident remanded in custody

A man in his 20s charged with assault causing harm, criminal damage and drug possession arising from an incident in a residential area of Dún Laoghaire on Monday has been remanded in custody after appearing before the District Court. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with assaulting a woman and causing her harm at a residential property in Dún Laoghaire on Monday, February 16 contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. He is further charged with damaging an upstairs bedroom window at a neighbouring property on the same date, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act 1991. The court heard the accused is also charged with the possession of heroin, cocaine and benzodiazepines, contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. He is additionally charged with criminal damage at Dún Laoghaire Garda Station, where it is alleged he spat food onto a cell wall and door after his arrest, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act 1991. No application for bail was made today before Judge Anne Watkin. The accused was remanded in custody to appear by video link before Cloverhill District Court at 10am on Tuesday, 24 February for a bail application. Judge Watkin directed that the accused receive medical attention for cuts he sustained during the incident, as well as for heroin addiction and mental health issues.
