How did people respond to the sentencing? | DW News
A Hong Kong court has sentenced pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison. This sentence follows his December conviction under a national security law imposed by Beijing.
Lai, the 78-year-old founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was an outspoken critic of China’s ruling Communist Party. Lai was arrested in 2020 under the new Hong Kong security law enacted following anti-government protests. Lai's case underscores the decline of press freedom in Hong Kong under Chinese rule.
