Man (27) stole van at Sligo bus station before crashing it into a field on the outskirts of town

A 27-year-old man stole a van and crashed it into a field, Sligo District Court heard. Kelven McSharry of Fivemilebourne, Calry was charged with stealing a vehicle belonging to Secure All Security, driving without insurance and failing to produce a certificate of insurance at Sligo Bus Station on October 8, 2024. He later met Gardaí at O’Connell Street and informed them that there was a tracking device on the van. Gardaí went to the location shown by the tracking device and found the van crashed in a field. Gardaí then saw a man and a woman running away. McSharry was apprehended by Gardaí. The defendant admitted to taking the vehicle without permission. CCTV of the incident was available from Sligo Bus Station. The court heard that McSharry had one previous conviction. Judge O’Reilly was informed by Sergeant McDonagh that the vehicle was back on the road and that the insurance company paid for the damage caused.Judge O’Reilly noted that McSharry had taken steps to get a job and adjourned the case to June 4 for a probation report.
