AHL round-up: Kerry goal rush continues, Derry win

Kerry's hunger for goals continues unabated as they took their tally to 12 in three games following a 5-21 to 1-21 Division 2 win over London at Austin Stack Park. John Griffin’s side hit the first 1-02 of the game, Daniel Casey with the opening goal, and they added three more goals before the break through Oisín Maunsell, Michael Slattery and Jordan Brick as they led 4-11 to 0-08. Sean Glynn nabbed London’s major with 15 minutes remaining but Ronan Walsh quickly responded for the Kingdom as they ran out 12-point victors with Conor Byrne sent off for the visitors in the final moments. Derry got off the mark at the third attempt in Division 2 with a 2-25 to 0-20 win over Mayo at Find Insurance Celtic Park. The first 25 minutes were tit-for-tat, the sides evenly sharing 18 points, but Shea Cassidy’s goal gave Derry a foothold in the game and the same player was on target again just before the break as Derry led 2-12 to 0-11. Shea Cassidy was on the double for Derry The Oakleafers grabbed three of the first four points on the restart to really take control and despite the best efforts of Mayo free-taker Cormac Phillips, Derry ran out comfortable winners. In Division 3, Roscommon picked up a comfortable two points as they defeated hosts Armagh 2-17 to 0-12. The opening exchanges were evenly fought, but once Liam Óg Coyle found the net for the Rossies midway through the first half they never looked back. The lead was at six points just before the break, but Cian Murray found the net to give the Connacht outfit a commanding interval lead. Roscommon did lose Jack Dowling to a red card in the 56th minute and substitute Dan Staunton was also dismissed late on, but it mattered little as they made it two wins from two. Sligo maintained their 100% record in Division 4 with a 4-21 to 1-12 win over Lancashire in Enniscrone. Robert O’Kelly-Lynch seemed to set the tone in the opening seconds with a goal, but Lancashire actually hit the front 25 minutes in, 1-05 to 1-04, with Shane Nugent scoring their goal. Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch then netted for Sligo to give them a 2-08 to 1-08 interval lead and his second major, along with a goal from Eddie O’Donoghue five minutes from time, wrapped up the win. Longford were far too strong for Monaghan at Cloghan, the visitors with a double-scores 1-23 to 0-13 win. Longford led 0-12 to 0-03 at the break, Reuben Murray and Martin Farrell doing the majority of the damage with Monaghan’s cause hurt further by a red card for James Brady. Longford immediately made their numerical advantage count on the restart as Joe Rabbitt found the net to put the game beyond the hosts. To their credit, Monaghan battled well from there with Niall Arthur and Ethain Flynn sending over a number of frees, but the result was never in doubt.
