Fatal Dublin bus crash shares striking similarities to Wellington Quay tragedy
The fatal bus crash in the capital earlier today will no doubt evoke memories of the Wellington Quay tragedy, which took place nearly 22 years ago. While the full facts of yesterday's smash are not yet known, both share striking similarities and occurred within walking distance of each other. On February 21 2004, an out-of-control bus mounted the footpath and crashed into a group of people who were boarding the 66 bus to Maynooth.Kevin Garry, Kathleen Gilton, Margaret Traynor, Vasyl Tyminskyy, and Teresa Keatley died as a result of the tragedy, while over a dozen others were injured.Bus driver Kenneth Henvey had taken over control of an out-of-service bus and moments later, the vehicle started to move forward, mounted the footpath, and crashed into the crowd on Wellington Quay.Mr Henvey was cleared by a Circuit Criminal Court jury in 2007 after pleading not guilty to dangerous driving causing death. His defence's case was that the bus was faulty and had experienced a "power surge" that caused it to veer out of his control.Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
