Lake District town named UK's most popular travel destination
Two Lake District hotspots have been named in the UK’s top ten most popular travel destinations.
Ambleside, located in the Lake District, has taken the national top spot for 2026 booking trends according to data from holidaycottages.co.uk.
The holiday lettings agency said Ambleside is leading the way for domestic getaway bookings.
The picturesque town is renowned for its stunning waterfront location and proximity to Windermere.
Sarah Pring, PR manager at holidaycottages.co.uk, said: "It’s clear from the data that holidaymakers are seeking destinations that offer a blend of natural beauty, unique experiences, and a sense of escape throughout 2026.
"The locations on the list reflect the diverse appeal of the UK, and the beauty we have right on our doorstep.
"Whether it’s a dog-friendly retreat or a foodie haven, there’s something for everyone to discover to make the most of a truly joyful escape – and what’s even better, they’re reachable without having to deal with airport stress."
Further down the top ten, Keswick secured sixth place.
Located on the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick was praised for its dramatic scenery and outdoor activities.

Visitors can enjoy everything from hiking Skiddaw to exploring lakeside trails.
The town’s busy market square, independent shops, and cultural attractions, including the Theatre by the Lake.
A Tripadvisor reviewer described the theatre as a "great little theatre which was really nicely located and we saw a brilliant performance."
With 45 per cent of 2026 bookings including a dog, holidaycottages.co.uk said demand remains high for pet-friendly stays.
Properties that accommodate larger groups are also proving popular, reflecting a trend toward family gatherings and group escapes.
Ms Pring said the popularity of these destinations presents a valuable opportunity for businesses and property owners.
She said: "With destinations like Ambleside, Bakewell, and Porthleven topping the list, businesses and holiday homeowners in these areas can capitalise on the influx of visitors by offering tailored experiences, dog-friendly amenities, and packages that cater to larger groups.
"What’s more, as holidaymakers prioritise convenience, comfort, and memorable experiences in the great outdoors, there’s never been a better time for businesses to innovate and showcase the best of what the UK has to offer."
The company said winter is typically a high booking period with families and groups already planning trips for spring and the May half-term.
