Whoopi Goldberg Is Currently Starring in an Italian Soap Opera
Whoopi Goldberg has taken her talents overseas—to Italy, specifically. On Friday, January 23, the EGOT winner and The View moderator announced that she joined the cast of the Italian soap opera Un Posto Al Sole, translated to A Place in the Sun in English. Produced by Fremantle and broadcast on Rai 3, A Place in the Sun has been running continuously for 30 years, having premiered in 1996.Apparently, it was Goldberg who decided to join the long-running Italian soap opera. “No one convinced me to do it: I’m the one who wanted to do it because it would have led me to spend more time in Italy, since I frequent your country for other reasons,” she exclusively told VF Italia. On the series, Goldberg will portray Eleanor Price, an American businesswoman who has arrived in Naples to commission the construction of a yacht and settle some unfinished business from her past.In conversation with VF Italia, Goldberg lamented the lack of soap operas in her native US. “There used to be a lot of historical soaps on the air in the United States, while today there are only two left: There are times when it would be necessary to abstract yourself from yourself, and soap operas help you do that by making you live better,” said Goldberg. “One should always give credit to the actor’s craft, express appreciation. When I came back to the United States, I phoned a friend who works in a soap and told him that I finally realized how incredible what he does is.”Apparently, some Italians are less than thrilled that Goldberg is appearing on the soap opera. According to VF Italia, some Italians have taken issue with the fact that her character said she loves “Sorrento lemons” and also suggested that some viewers were turned off by the use of subtitles for Goldberg’s character. Nevertheless, Goldberg seems quite thrilled to be on the program. “Acting in Naples then, in some ways, was a kind of vacation because it allowed me to take my mind off politics and the bad things happening in the world for a while,” said Goldberg. “A world that is very fast: I, however, am old and need a slower pace.
