2026 Action Thriller Has Me Convinced This Avatar Star Should Play An Older Jack Reacher

With Reacher riding high on Prime Video, Alan Ritchson is the current face of hobo justice. Before Ritchson, it was Tom Cruise, who starred in a duo of big screen efforts adapting Lee Child's work. As such, Jack Reacher has always been depicted in visual media as a man in his prime, aged in his late 30s or early 40s. That's broadly consistent with how Child's books started, but with Reacher growing older across the span of 30-odd publications, the literary character would now be in his 60s. The novels mitigate their protagonist's aging somewhat, but Reacher's age in the books poses the curious question of whether a live-action project would ever go down the route of having an older, more grizzled hero. More curious still, who would have the presence to play a version of Jack Reacher in his 60s or 70s? An Upcoming Action Thriller Proves Stephen Lang Would Be Perfect As An Older Jack Reacher Stephen Lang sitting in a bar in Hellfire Releasing in February 2026, Hellfire stars Stephen Lang in an action thriller with neo-western vibes. Looking at both the overall plot and Hellfire's action sequences, however, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a Jack Reacher story set during his retirement years. Lang plays an ex-military drifter who arrives in a rural town and decides to help its ailing population by bringing down the criminal element lurking within. Said criminal element involves both a local crime boss and the town's sheriff. That is, essentially, Reacher, and feels particularly similar to Prime Video's first season (based on Killing Floor), in which Ritchson's character pulled up in Margrave and ejected the villainous Kliner family after they corrupted the whole town with their counterfeit money racket. Lang's character is, like Reacher, a near-invincible one-man army averse to injustice, and Hellfire capitalizes on that with a string of intense and hard-hitting action scenes that Reacher himself would have to admit being impressed by. While Hellfire is an intriguing proposition in its own right, it does also demonstrate how perfect Stephen Lang would be as a version of Jack Reacher orbiting his 70s. Lang has the quiet, intimidating presence and the militaristic grit needed to do Lee Child's character justice, and Hellfire's fight scenes prove he would have the moves to back that up. Reacher is famously a man of few words, and Lang possesses that all-important ability to convey authority and instill fear in criminals without opening his mouth. Stephen Lang Doesn't Need To Be A Giant To Play Jack Reacher Colonel Quaritch inside a robot in Avatar One of the biggest criticisms leveled at Tom Cruise's casting for the 2010s' Jack Reacher movies was that he lacked the necessary physique. Alan Ritchson is much closer to Lee Child's character, both in terms of his height and muscular frame. Stephen Lang sits somewhere in the middle. The Avatar actor isn't a six-footer like Ritchson, but one look at Colonel Quaritch proves he has the correct build. It's worth bearing in mind, however, that any adaptation starring a version of Reacher 30 years older than we're currently seeing on Prime Video would be less reliant on physical stature, making Lang's height somewhat redundant. There are plenty of tricks to make an actor seem taller, but nailing Reacher's demeanor, aura, and unique personality is a skill that can't be faked. If Reacher ever indulges in a flashforward episode to show the future of Alan Ritchson's character, it's hard to think of an actor who could tick those boxes quite like Stephen Lang.
