Irish hopes on Mescal and Buckley at Golden Globes
Irish actors Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley are among the nominees as the 83rd Golden Globe Awards take place tonight in Los Angeles.
The pair are recognised for their performances in Chloé Zhao's Hamnet, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about William Shakespeare, his wife Agnes, and their son.
Mescal is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category, while Buckley is shortlisted for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture.
Watch: Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal talk to RTÉ Entertainment about Hamnet.
The ceremony is being held at the Beverly Hilton and will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, with the winners to be announced tonight in the US. (In Ireland, that broadcast falls in the early hours of Monday morning.)
Mescal’s fellow nominees include Benicio del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Sean Penn, Adam Sandler and Stellan Skarsgård, while Buckley is up against Jennifer Lawrence, Renate Reinsve, Julia Roberts, Tessa Thompson and Eva Victor.
There is also Irish interest elsewhere on the film side. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, produced by Dublin-based Element Pictures, is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons both shortlisted in acting categories for the film.
On television, All Her Fault, based on the novel by Dublin author Andrea Mara, is nominated in the Limited Series category, with Sarah Snook also shortlisted for her leading role.
This year’s Golden Globes arrive with a crowded field across film and TV, including Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leading the movie nominations, while The White Lotus is the most-nominated TV title.
