Daredevil’s Newest Controversy Is So Petty It’s Hilarious
A new Daredevil ongoing comic book run is on the way, and there are several reasons why it’ll be an exciting one to pull when it eventually launches. There’s still a bit of a wait until it is released, as it was delayed to April 1, 2026, in order to resolve the issue that had affected Ultimate Endgame’s blind bags before Daredevil’s own blind bags are out, yet an interview/preview has revealed four of the first issue’s opening pages in full. It was previously revealed that this run would introduce a mysterious new villain, as well as explore Matthew Murdock as a law professor. In this preview, though, an alarming and unprecedented change to the character has been discovered: a strawberry blonde hair color replacing Daredevil’s signature red hair.
Matt Murdock’s Rocking a New Hair Color
Funny enough, it wasn’t immediately obvious that Matt wasn’t going to have his traditional red hair in Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett’s Daredevil run. The preview page was originally only shown in inks with no color, so it was understandably a surprise when the colored version was unveiled recently, and his hair was a shade of light brown/sandy blonde, or even strawberry blonde.
It’s only been a notable feature because of how unusual it is, at least for a Matt drawn in a comic book, whose hair would typically be colored orange/naturally redheaded. However, many fans are probably already indifferent or unaffected by Matt’s hair color change in this upcoming run due to the imagery of a dark brown-haired Charlie Cox portraying Daredevil for the last decade.
Charlie Cox’s unmistakably brown hair appeared reddish early in the character’s Netflix career, and red hair was reportedly attempted to no avail.
Nonetheless, it’s no surprise that some readers may be taken aback by it. Though Matt’s hair color fluctuations don’t seem to be that big of a deal to the creative teams that design him in recent iterations, anyway, series artist Lee Garbett has since responded to this shock, explaining that the reason for the change was to “colour match from Matt’s hair in the Miller/Mazzucchelli run.”
Daredevil’s Relaunch is Quite Distinct
The bigger picture is that Matt’s hair color isn’t this comic run’s most significant change or addition to Daredevil lore. Indeed, this run is debuting a brand-new Marvel villain, Omen, who “brings the combination of noir and horror to Hell’s Kitchen” and is inspired by “Gothic literature and Greek tragedies,” according to series writer Stephanie Phillips.
Likewise, Matt’s plate will be full as a fish-out-of-water law professor at Marvel’s Empire State University. It might take some readers a hot minute to digest Matt’s strawberry blonde hair—hopefully not until issue #1 in April—but the overall premise and how the book intends to juggle the balance between Matt’s classroom and crime-fighting activities seem far more incredibly compelling anyway.
