EV maker Lucid expands model lineup with SUV, about to reveal more affordable model

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- After Tesla's almost immediate success, other electric vehicle startups wanted in on the action. That includes California-based Lucid Motors, which arrived with the very sleek Air sedan. It blew everyone away - including many reviewers - with a record 520 miles of battery range for the top version. But at a very steep price tag."Really more of a sort of showcase of what the company's capable of. A display of intent as to what the company wants to do," said industry watcher Ed Kim, president and chief analyst at AutoPacific.Later came a more affordable Air variant called Pure, less range, less content, but the same stylish looks for a price that would attract a broader audience. (The Air Pure starts at about $70,000.) But it's still a sedan. Today, those don't fly on their own."SUVs make up the bulk of new vehicle sales in the U.S. market, and unless they're playing in that space, they probably don't have a business," Kim said. Now Lucid is there - with the Gravity. Not just an electric SUV, but one with a third-row seat to appeal to families. Still not inexpensive at a starting price of around $80,000, but the built-in-Arizona EV people hauler gives Lucid a much more solid footing in the market. And it does offer some cool features, like the "frunk" that turns into a tailgating seat with a custom cushion, and compatibility with Tesla's Supercharger network. And if you find modern vehicles a bit claustrophobic, the windshield that curves into a glass roof overhead gives an airy feeling. The Gravity does face some competition. Back when Lucid was first conceived as a premium EV brand, there just weren't that many players in the space. But today? Things are different. In recent years, traditional premium automakers have nearly all jumped into the EV business, especially with SUVs. Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Cadillac are all in the game too, with three-row electric models. There's plenty of competition out there. So what does Lucid need now? An upcoming third vehicle, smaller, and much more affordable for broader appeal. No details yet, but it will be a compact or mid-size SUV with a price tag in the $50-60,000 range, and which the company plans to launch this year."This is really the make-or-break vehicle for Lucid. Have high volumes and be able to sell enough units to have a sustainable business," Kim noted of the upcoming Lucid model.Copyright © 2026 KABC Television, LLC. All rights reserved.
