Actor Simu Liu has offered his own casting suggestion for the next Wonder Woman, pitching actress Melissa Barrera as a strong contender for the iconic DC role.
Speaking to JoBlo, Liu praised Barrera’s commitment to physical preparation and stunt training, hinting that her intensity reminded him of the legendary Amazon warrior. “She really pushes herself,” Liu said. “I don’t know who might be listening to this interview, James Gunn or anybody else out there. But I think she really pushes herself. There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like, ‘That’s Wonder Woman-esque.’ I’m just throwing it out there.”
Liu’s comments come at a time when the future of Wonder Woman is very much in flux. In June 2025, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film is currently “being written right now”, according to Variety. The film is part of DC’s wider reset and will exist alongside an upcoming HBO series centred on Themyscira, the mythical homeland of Wonder Woman.
Gunn previously described the Themyscira project as “slow-moving, but it’s moving”, suggesting that while development has been deliberate, the studio remains committed to expanding the Wonder Woman corner of the DC universe.
According to Variety, screenwriter Ana Nogueira was brought on board in July 2025 to write the new Wonder Woman film.
Nogueira is also developing a live-action Teen Titans project for DC, placing her at the centre of the studio’s evolving slate.
