‘It’s an act of treachery from our closest friend’: US National Security document
Matt Frei speaks with former member of Georgia's Ministry of Defence, Natia Seskuria and former US ambassador to the EU, Anthony Gardner.
Speaking of Europe's involvement in a possible peace deal in Ukraine, Seskuria thinks that Europe's options are 'limited' and that it is near impossible to 'stop Russia's ambition' to invade furthur.
Matt Frei asks Anthony Gardner about the White House's newly released national security strategy document about the EU. The former ambassador simply states he views it as an 'act of treachery'.
The 33-page document suggests Europe is facing 'civilisational erasure' and does not cast Russia as a threat to the US.
EU officials have warned that the document could weaken its stance towards Moscow, particularly as it pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine.
Gardner calls the document 'obscene' and suggests it goes against years of 'bi-partisan' relations between the EU and the US, stating it could have been 'written by the Kremlin'.
Gardner moves on to say that US president Donald Trump has a 'visceral loathing' for all the EU stands for and its 'dismantling' would benefit Trump's motivations.
