Tuned Japanese rally car drag race: Mitsubishi vs Subaru vs Toyota

In the early 2000s, a lot of car enthusiasts were split into one of two camps. You were either team Mitsubishi Evo, or you were team Subaru Impreza. That rivalry has died down in recent years following the death of the hot Impreza and Mitsubishi’s retreat from the UK entirely. But next year Mitsubishi is coming back to the UK, and while it’s not bringing a new Evo to market, the announcement did get me feeling all nostalgic. So I’ve got a tuned Evo 9 and a tuned Impreza WRX STI together for a drag race. And to spice things up a bit, I’ve also got a tuned Toyota GR Corolla. Like the other two cars, this is a rally-bred car which was built as a homologation special so Toyota could go racing with it, so it’ll be interesting to see how this new kid on the block compares to the OGs. Let’s take a closer look at the stats. Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey. Mitsubishi Evo 9 I’m driving the Evo 9 today, and under the bonnet I have a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine which has been tuned to 406hp and 488Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, and the car weighs in at around 1,500kg. Toyota GR Corolla Next to me is the Toyota GR Corolla. It uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which has been tuned to produce 420hp and 445Nm of torque. It also has four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox, and it weighs 1,470kg. Subaru Impreza WRX STI Finally we have the Impreza, which uses a 2.5-litre turbocharged flat-four boxer engine. This car is putting out 413hp and 578Nm of torque thanks to some modifications, and power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The Subaru tips the scales at 1,505kg. So that’s the numbers, but they only tell half the story. How easy will these cars be to launch? Will we face any issues? Make sure you watch the video to find out. Car change? Carwow!
