Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal are Critics Choice nominees

Hamnet stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal are among the Irish nominees for the Critics Choice Awards in the US. Buckley is nominated in the Best Actress category, and Mescal is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for their performances in the Oscar-tipped film. Directed by the Oscar-winning Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, The Rider) and based on the book of the same name by Co Derry-born author Maggie O'Farrell, Hamnet "tells the powerful love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet". Hamnet has received 11 Critics Choice nominations in total, including Best Film and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for director Zhao and author O'Farrell. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal's nominations are among the 11 received by Hamnet Irish double Oscar winner Richard Baneham is nominated for his visual effects work on Avatar: Fire and Ash. In the film categories, the vampire thriller Sinners leads the nominations with 17. In the television categories, the crime drama Adolescence leads the shortlist with six nominations. The awards will take place on Sunday, 4 January at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Hamnet will be released in cinemas on Friday, 9 January.
