Ghosts Season 5 Brings Back Sass' Underused Dream Powers
Ghosts season 5, episode 7 features the return of one of the most unique and underused supernatural abilities. Every spirit in Woodstone Manor has powers, with some, like Trevor’s, getting more respect while others, like Alberta’s, are belittled. While Pete has his own tiered system, this is actually the definitive power ranking of spirit powers in Ghosts. Sass' power to enter the dreams of the Living with full agency has so many interesting and useful applications, but it is Ghosts’ most tragically ignored talent — not even used until season 3, and only sparingly since then. Instead, much of Ghosts season 4 focuses on the overdone joke of Sass' virginity. The introduction of Joan in Ghosts season 4, a Roamer who connected with Sass, seemed to be the end of Sass' romantic frustrations. However, while Sass' dream abilities are excitingly featured in season 5, episode 7, it is the beginning of the end of Sass and Joan.
Ghosts Season 5, Episode 7 Brings Back Sass' Forgotten Powers
Sass Enters Bela’s Dream At A Low Moment For Both Ghosts Characters
Sass in Jay's dream in Ghosts
Sass' power in Ghosts is wildly underused, but the hit CBS show rarely relies on it. The Lenape spirit has a unique ability to pop into the dreams of the Living, providing a hilarious and often enlightening glimpse into their subconscious. Time and again, the spirits go to Herculean lengths to get the smallest, most cryptic messages to Jay, when all they really need is to wait for him to nap. Sass could communicate everything with precision, and yet, his dream-hopping is rarely a consideration. When used, the results are brilliant. In season 3, episode 2, Sass infiltrates Jay’s dream to settle a marital debate over the optimal place to hang a TV, subtly steering him inception-style while amusingly securing a pizza oven for himself. Season 4, episode 5, shows him creatively manipulating a dream so he can flirt with a girl. Alberta in Ghosts season 4, episode 15 sends Sass into the dream of a living relative to deliver an unintentionally incorrect message, but course-corrects with her own rarely used power. Each instance highlights the potential for humor, character development, and visual fun. Dream sequences give Sass a chance to break out of his traditional Lenape wardrobe and explore new looks, while providing viewers with unique insights into the Livings’ subconsciouses. Given how often the ghosts struggle to communicate through elaborate and indirect means, it’s baffling that Sass' dream-hopping hasn’t become a central tool for the team. In season 5, episode 7, Ghosts finally leans into Sass' power again. He enters Bela’s dream to comfort her — both misreading the romantic situations in their lives — but the scene is a perfect reminder of how versatile and underutilized this ability is.
Sass' Bela Entanglement Sets Up A Dark Future For Him & Joan
Sass' Assumptions About Joan Make No Sense
Season 5, episode 7 has set up what may be Sass' darkest romantic chapter yet. Jay's sister Bela believes her boyfriend Eric has canceled his trip to visit her, while Sass is reeling from Joan’s absence. Joan, needing to return periodically to her origin of death or risk disappearing, has passed the date she told Sass she’d be back. The spirits, including Sass himself, jump to the conclusion that she has ghosted him for good. Heartbroken, Sass turns to Bela in her dreams to commiserate over their respective romantic disappointments, which, in true Ghosts fashion, leads to a physical connection. Of course, it’s a comedy of errors. Bela doesn’t know that Sam orchestrated a surprise with Eric to make their proposal as romantic as possible, given her memory of her disappointing engagement story with Jay. While Eric ultimately forgives her “dream infidelity,” Bela realizes she doesn’t actually want to be with him; she’s just afraid of being alone. For Sass, this is a disastrous precedent. Their dream dalliance has led to an irrevocable split with Bela, and it leaves Sass emotionally compromised if Joan does return. Even stranger, no spirit questions whether something might have happened to Joan. Pete has had travel issues abroad, and Flower was trapped in a well in Ghosts season 3, but everyone jumps to the conclusion that Joan has abandoned Sass. While it’s almost certain Joan will return, the damage is done. Even if Joan forgives Sass for “dream cheating,” there’s no way their trust can be fully restored. It’s salt in the wound for Bela to candidly call Sass her second-choice ghost. Sass may soon have the answer to an existential question: Is it better to have loved and lost, or never loved at all?
What Sass & Bela's Unexpected Interaction Means For Ghosts Season 5
Bela Expressed Her Desires, But They’re Farther Away Than Ever
Ghosts' latest episode delivered a surprising twist with Sass and Bela’s unexpected romantic encounter while also raising humorous and intriguing questions about the series’ lore. In Bela’s dream, Sass eats some popcorn, prompting the question: Can spirits actually taste food in dreams? Given how obsessed the ghosts are with smelling and tasting food when they’re conscious, it’s a small but fascinating detail that could hint at the untapped potential of his dream-based abilities. Sass's powers are undeniably awesome, but the show has wisely used them sparingly. The dream-hopping ability opens up opportunities for emotional insight and visual creativity, but it can’t be a catch-all solution for every communication problem the spirits face. Hopefully, the series continues to explore these powers while maintaining that balance, letting Sass shine without short-circuiting the natural storytelling tension. More than anything, the episode feels like a cautionary tale for Sam’s meddling. Bela and Sass' encounter exists because Eric “canceled” his trip at Sam’s suggestion, intended as a surprise that ultimately leads to an emotionally honest realization for Bela. While Sam’s schemes often short-circuit genuine character growth, this episode highlights Sam’s worst trait in Ghosts. There’s also the broader romantic ripple effect to consider. This could be the push Jay needs to finally accept Ben Feldman's Kyle as a more permanent fixture at Woodstone Manor. Bela wants to find love and start a family, and Kyle has been navigating his own romantic frustrations, so they could end up being the perfect solution for each other. Sass and Bela’s dream-based encounter may signal major romantic shake-ups at Woodstone Manor. The episode hints at a future where Ghosts leans into dream hijinks, allowing Sass to shine.
