Holiday destination popular with Irish tourists among hotspots travellers told to avoid in 2026
A holiday destination that’s popular with Irish tourists is among several hotspots that a travel magazine has told holidaymakers to avoid in 2026.
While some people may be planning their summer getaways for 2026 already due to discounted flights and hotels, some places become overrun with tourists in the busy season.
With that, travel magazine Fodor’s Travel have released its ‘No List,’ a collection of eight spots across the world that they believe people should stay away from next year: with the Canary Islands being one of the destinations that they recommend people avoid.

Citing the frustrations of residents in the Canaries, one of the most popular winter sun destinations, by the levels of tourism over the past few years, protests took place across some of the major cities on the island.
‘Residents have started protesting because they’re genuinely fed up,’ John Dale Buckley of CanaryGreen told Fodor’s Travels. ‘Traffic is one of the biggest issues. What used to be a 40-minute drive from the north can now take well over an hour each way.’
‘The government [also] previously changed regulations that allowed residents to rent out their properties on Airbnb and Booking.com,’ he added. ‘This has driven up both rental prices and property values. Many young people now find it almost impossible to rent or buy a home.’

Alongside the Canaries in the list were Mexico City, where similar protests broke out as locals blamed short-term holiday lets for the city’s ongoing housing crisis. Residents have also said that they feel left behind by the tourist industry, which they feel is contributing to the ‘commodification of community life.’
Glacier National Park in Montana in the US was also on the no-go list, as the melting glaciers have seen over 300,000 more visitors in 2024 than 2023, while Isola Sacra, a quiet coastal district 20 miles outside of Rome, is also on the list – with residents saying that the coastline will be ‘overturned by piers and docks, hotels and new commercial buildings.’
Amazingly, Antarctica is also a location at risk of overtourism, with the number of tourists heading to the bottom of the globe in their droves. Over 120,000 tourists are said to have visited Antarctica from 2023 to 2024, with that number expected to double by 2033.
