Venue pays tribute to Stone Roses star who was set for 2026 show

The Broadway Cinema and Theatre was set to welcome the bassist as part of his 2026 in-conversation tour before his death at the age of 63. "The team at Broadway Cinema and Theatre was shocked today to hear of the sad passing of Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the legendary bassist of the Stone Roses," the venue said. "The Stone Roses are one of the most iconic bands of the past 35 years, and they paved the way for a Britpop generation. "Mani was a powerhouse of a musician, and was due to appear at our theatre in 2026. Our sympathies are with his family, friends and millions of fans around the world." Alongside Ian Brown, John Squire and Alan "Reni" Wren, Mounfield and the Stone Roses were key players in the "Madchester" scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band ushered in the iconic Britpop era by inspiring bands such as Oasis, while their 1989 eponymous debut album is credit as being one of the best British records ever made. Featuring hits such as I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums and I Am The Resurrection, the NME named it the greatest British album of all time back in 2006. After a dispute with their record label, The Stone Roses would release a second album in 1994 but split soon after, with Mounfield joining Primal Scream in 1996. Mani would leave the Scottish band in 2011 to reform The Stone Roses, with new singles released and a reunion tour played before the band members went their separate ways once again. Tributes to Mani poured in from the across the music world yesterday, with Oasis singer Liam Gallagher posting: "In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani. My hero, RIP R Kid." "RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for," read an official post from The Stone Roses. Richard Ashcroft of The Verve - who played at Stevenage's Lamex Stadium this year - described the bassist as an "inspiration" and "one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with".
