POLL OF THE DAY: Is the Home Secretary talking tough enough on migration?

Shabana Mahmood is expected to unveil plans to reform human rights laws in an effort to boost the deportation of illegal migrants and foreign criminals from Britain. The Home Secretary will outline detailed proposals in Parliament on Monday, aiming to increase removals of individuals without the right to remain in Britain. The Government has described the measures as the most far-reaching reforms to address illegal migration in recent history.“The changes are necessary to overcome years of obstacles currently faced by the Home Office in removing or deporting illegal migrants,” the Government said. “It will restore order and control to the immigration system and ensure it is fair for British people.”Under the proposed reforms, Britain is set to adopt to adopt a Denmark-style immigration system, which will see a tightening of family reunification rules, refugee status being made temporary and longer routes to permanent settlement in a bid to make the UK a less attractive destination for asylum seekers. However, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has said the plans are not "radical" enough. Mr Philp said that "the only thing that would stop people" arriving to Britain illegally would be if they were to face immediate deportation upon arrival. He added that Britain must leave the ECHR "so we can deport every single illegal arrival within a week".Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
