Robert Redford dead, aged 89, as tributes paid to Hollywood legend
The actor died at his home in Utah(Image: AP)Legendary Hollywood star Robert Redford has died at the age of 89, his publicist has confirmed.The actor had starring roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All The President's Men and more recently the Marvel Cinematic Universe.His death was confirmed by Cindi Berger, chief executive of publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.Cindi reported that Robert died in his sleep at his home in Utah early on Tuesday morning (September 16). Currently, a cause of death has not been provided."He will be missed greatly," she said, adding that his family has requested privacy at this time.The Hollywood star's career was incredibly impressive, with five Oscar nominations, two of them he won for Best Director for Ordinary People in 1980 and an Honorary Award in 2002.Redford was also known for his work in activism, and in 1981, he founded the Sundance Institute.This is a nonprofit that's dedicated to cultivating fresh cinematic voices. He also took over a struggling film festival in Utah in 1984 and renamed it after the institute a few years later.Sundance Festival will be well-known to film fanatics, and over the years directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Ava DuVernay have had their careers blossom from there.He was well known in Hollywood and for his activism(Image: Evan Agostini/Invision/AP)However, the star did criticise the commercialisation of the event, as he shared: "I want the ambush marketers — the vodka brands and the gift-bag people and the Paris Hiltons — to go away forever."They have nothing to do with what’s going on here!", while speaking to a reporter at the 2012 festival.With his activism, he "campaigned against a six-lane highway that was proposed in a Utah canyon", reported The New York Times.He was also a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council, for three decades.Discussing his activism, Robert previously exclaimed: "I was born with a hard eye. The way I saw things, I would see what was wrong. I could see what could be better. I developed kind of a dark view of life, looking at my own country."
