Missing Wirral man Mark Stonock found dead in Scotland
Mark Stonock, 56, from Wallasey, was last seen on Monday, September 1.
It was believed Mark, a double amputee wheelchair user, took a taxi to Lime Street station in Liverpool city centre on Tuesday, September 2, and was in the North Yorkshire area due to his links to Skipton.
At the time of his disappearance, Merseyside Police issued a missing person appeal in an effort to locate him.
At the time of the appeal, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “If you see Mark, please call 999 so we can make sure he’s safe.”
However, on Monday (September 8), Mark’s brother, Paul Stonock, announced with a “broken heart and deepest sorrow” that his younger brother had been found dead in Edinburgh on Saturday, September 6.
Paul, who has set up a fundraising page to raise money to repatriate Mark and cover his funeral costs, described his brother as “funny and talented”.
Posting on the fundraising page, he said: “It’s with a broken heart and deepest sorrow I share the passing of my little brother Mark.
“After many dark and difficult years, the black dogs have finally chased my brother down, and he finally took his own life in Edinburgh on 06/09/2025.
“He went missing from his home in Wallasey five days previously, and with so much hard work from all of his friends, colleagues, and Merseyside Police, we thought we would find him, but the fight had run out of him.
“He was a funny, funny, talented, idiotic human being who was blessed with three wonderful children.
“A man with such a creative spark on one side but carrying such burdens with him, yet all you would hear was, “I’m fine” and “I’m good,” yet he never was.
“I, his children, his closest friends, and everyone else who knew Mark have lost someone who literally left his mark in their lives, and big or small, will somehow never be the same.”
So far the fundraising page has received more than £3,000 in donations.
A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service told the Globe: "The Procurator Fiscal has received a report on the death of a 56-year-old man in Edinburgh on 6 September 2025.
"An investigation into the death is ongoing and significant developments will be shared with the family throughout the investigation.”
