Honda's new hybrid coupe from Japan features a glider-inspired design, optional sporty accessories, and Type R tech https://www.carscoops.com/author/thanos-pappas/ by Thanos Pappas Honda has confirmed a September 2025 launch for the new generation Prelude in Japan. The design draws inspiration from gliders and can be spiced up with optional accessories. The Prelude has a hybrid powertrain with simulated gear changes and Type R chassis bits. The all-new Honda Prelude is one of the most eagerly awaited debuts of the year, and it now has an official launch date: September 2025. Ahead of the full reveal, Honda has released new images of the hybrid coupe, along with fresh details about its design development and a range of sporty genuine accessories. Inspired By Gliders While the Prelude has already been shown to the world, the company has now given us a few insights on its development. Hideaki Uchino, the creative director of the project, has actually joined the company with the dream of designing a new Prelude. More: Type R Is Dead In Europe But What Comes Next Might Shock You The design of the “specialty sports model” is inspired by gliders – a type of engine-less aircraft that flies by using the lift generated by air currents. In the exterior, this is evident on the low nose with the wing-shaped LED headlights which are connected via a slim black chrome-plated grille. The model sits on black 19-inch alloy wheels with blue brake calipers, while the body can be painted in Moonlit White Pearl, Meteoroid Gray Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, and Flame Red shades. Furthermore, there is a limited edition with a Moonlit White Pearl body and a black roof that will be exclusively available online for Japanese buyers. Multi-Functional Interior The interior borrows parts from the mechanically-related Honda Civic and Acura Integra but adds a few Prelude-specific touches and sports a 2+2 layout. According to Yoshihisa Yanagimoto, who was in charge of packaging design, the Prelude is “a car you want to drive when going out with someone special”. Buyers will have two options for the upholstery, combining deep blue and white, or black. Honda gave emphasis to practicality, with a hatchback-style tailgate providing access to a spacious cargo area that can further expand by folding down the rear seats. The boot is also equipped with storage hooks, and extra space under the floor. Sporty Accessories The Honda Genuine Accessories department has already created a bodykit for the new Prelude ahead of its market launch. The “Sports Style” kit includes aerodynamic front bumper extensions, a body-colored molding for the grille, a black rear spoiler, black mirror caps and Honda emblems, as well as a different set of 19-inch alloy wheels (MS-051) with five double spokes. These accessories will be available in Japan at launch, with pricing set to be announced at a later date. Hybrid Powertrain And Type R Chassis Honda has yet to announce the detailed specifications of the Prelude’s powertrain but we already know it will feature an upgraded version of the e:HEV self-charging hybrid system combining a 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors. The highlight will be the “Honda S+ Shift” system simulating the feeling of gear changes by using sound effects, special torque mapping, and paddle shifters. A dedicated button on the center console activates this mode, giving drivers a more interactive experience behind the wheel. More: Honda’s New Coupe Uses Type R Parts Without Saying A Word The new Prelude might share its underpinnings with the Honda Civic and the Acura Integra but has a few aces up its sleeve. The wide front and rear tracks, Brembo front brakes, and dual-axis front suspension system are sourced from the Civic Type R. However, the Prelude’s suspension and brakes have unique tuning, which is more focused on comfort. Availability The new Prelude is expected to hit dealers in Japan, Europe, and North America this fall. Furthermore, it has now been confirmed that the hybrid coupe will reach Australia in mid-2026. Pricing for each market will be announced at a later date. Honda
