7 Best TV Twists That Aren't Talked About Nearly Enough
There are many great TV show plot twists out there, but several somehow fly under a lot of people's radars and aren’t talked about nearly enough. The biggest plot twists in TV history are discussed all the time, like the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, but it’s frustrating when certain moments in lesser-known shows don’t get the attention and appreciation they deserve. There is no formula to create a great, impactful plot twist. While surprising turns from the biggest, most popular shows tend to dominate the conversation among TV fanatics, there have been a lot of great twists that changed their shows but didn't have the same pop culture impact.

The Mastermind Reveal
Mr. Robot (2015-2019)
While Mr. Robot’s major plot twists are now getting more appreciation, thanks to the show’s recent addition to streaming services drawing new viewers in, there is one that is more underrated than the others. Throughout the show, it’s clear that there is more to Elliot than meets the eye.

Mr. Robot's 10 Best Episodes, Ranked From Great To Masterpiece
Few shows are as consistently brilliant as Mr. Robot, but the 10 best episodes still manage to stand out as the pinnacle of the mind-bending thriller.
However, in the series finale, “Hello, Elliot,” Mr. Robot finally reveals exactly who the Mastermind is: Elliot. The Mastermind is actually yet another personality of Elliot’s, which he creates to help cope with reality, and that is who we see throughout the whole show, not the real Elliot.
Mr. Robot is now available to stream on Netflix.
This is such an impressive plot twist, especially considering the Mastermind is not the first alternate personality of the main character. While it’s a tad tropey to take a character with mental health conditions and introduce alter egos or personalities, Mr. Robot executes it in a truly powerful and clever way.

Claire Makes Lee Kill Pippa
Broadchurch (2013-2017)
Although the revelation of who killed Danny Latimer in Broadchurch is the show’s main plot twist and the most widely discussed, there is another that is massively underrated. Season 2’s storyline sees Hardy revisit a haunting investigation from his past, which surrounds the disappearance and deaths of a young girl and her older cousin, and introduces Claire, the spouse of the main suspect, Lee.

Despite Claire’s claims that she is scared of Lee and doesn’t know what happened to Pippa, it turns out that the woman tells her husband to kill the child after she overhears him and her cousin having sex, which is a huge plot twist, especially as Claire is seemingly innocent for most of the season.

Kim Is Still Pregnant
Scrubs (2001-2010)
Kim lying about her miscarriage in Scrubs is one of the most frustrating things a sitcom character somehow gets away with. In season 6, J.D. visits Kim at her new job in Tacoma to attend an ultrasound for their unborn child, only for his long-distance girlfriend to reveal she had lost the baby. However, sixteen episodes later, J.D. bumps into a heavily pregnant Kim at a medical conference. Sixteen episodes is a long enough time for both the characters and audiences to move on from the plot, which is why it’s so unexpected. What’s particularly annoying about this twist, though, is that J.D. basically lets the whole thing slide.

Scrubs: Why Kim Lied To J.D. About Her Baby
In one of Scrubs' darkest moments, Kim Briggs lies to J.D. about his baby. She's shown to be an otherwise good person, so why would she lie to him?
Although he somewhat understands Kim’s logic, it’s baffling that Scrubs viewers don’t mention this subplot more. While Ben’s death in the Scrubs episode “My Screw Up” will forever be the show’s biggest plot twist, this one is almost as jarring and wild.

Annyong's True Identity
Arrested Development (2003-2019)
Because it’s a sitcom, and because of its general sense of humor, Arrested Development isn’t exactly known for plot twists. However, there is one subtler plot twist that is so unbelievably clever, I’m confused about why audiences don’t talk about it more. Annyong is the youngest member of the Bluth family in Arrested Development, who Lucille and George adopted from Korea.
Annyong spies on the Bluths from inside the penthouse’s walls, and hasn’t really been attending the prestige academy his adoptive brothers went to.
However, in the season 3 finale, Annyong suddenly reappears from attending the Milford School, and he reveals that he is actually the biological grandson of the original creator of the banana stand. Annyong spies on the Bluths from inside the penthouse’s walls, and hasn’t really been attending the prestige academy his adoptive brothers went to. Arrested Development’s first three seasons focus on the SEC’s attempts to jail George for his crimes, but, hilariously, Annyong causes the Bluth family’s downfall for a second time immediately after the treason charges are dropped. This small piece of lore that ties into the entirety of the show is brilliant, and while it’s comical, it’s also well-thought-out.

Oswin Is A Dalek
Doctor Who (Modern Era) (2005-2022)
While audiences now know there are many versions of Clara Oswald in Doctor Who, back when season 7 aired, the sudden early appearance of new companion Jenna Coleman in “Asylum of the Daleks” was a massive shock. The Doctor’s realization that his new friend Oswin, who he only hears the voice of, is actually a converted Dalek, is a shocker. Doctor Who is rather sneaky in how it slowly reveals this detail. Oswin’s subconscious is present, and she’s unaware that upon crashing, she had been converted into a Dalek because of her intelligence. The Doctor points out she can’t get souffle ingredients anywhere, and it’s wild how many audiences fail to notice this on their first watch through.

Even Doctor Who Admits It Keeps Pulling The Same Companion Trick Over & Over Again
Belinda Chandra says something to the Doctor that amusingly has way more meaning to the show's viewers than it does to the Time Lord himself.
However, due to the fact that Coleman appeared in the show before the Ponds’ departure, this plot twist was overlooked at the time, and it’s one that viewers hardly ever mention nowadays, too. Doctor Who tries to replicate this same twist with Mundy Flynn in season 14, but we’re yet to get a proper explanation or resolution to this storyline.

Ambrose's Involvement In Trudy's Death
Monk (2002-2009)
One of Monk’s most tragic plot twists plays a part in the titular detective’s never-ending search for the truth about his wife’s death, but doesn’t actually reveal her killer. In the season 2 episode “Mr. Monk and the Three Pies,” Adrian reunites with Ambrose. Ambrose pulls away after Trudy’s death, although this is mainly because he’s agoraphobic and hasn’t gone outside for decades. At least, this initially seems to be the case. However, Ambrose later breaks down and confesses that on the day she died, Trudy went to collect medication for him, and if he hadn’t asked her to do so, she’d still be alive. While this surprising admission of guilt doesn’t help Adrian get any closer to finding Trudy’s killer in Monk, it’s still a plot twist.
It explains why Ambrose has become even more of a recluse, as well as why he hasn’t been supporting his brother through his grief over the last seven or so years.
It explains why Ambrose has become even more of a recluse, as well as why he hasn’t been supporting his brother through his grief over the last seven or so years. The scene in which Ambrose breaks down in Adrian’s arms is devastating and emotional to watch, but it’s a moment in Monk overall that is definitely not discussed enough.

The Man Rebecca Has Been Texting Is Sam
Ted Lasso (2020-2023)
Rebecca’s romance with Sam in Ted Lasso season 2 is a really interesting subplot in the show, and it breathes fresh air into the age gap and power dynamic TV tropes. For several episodes, both the characters and audiences are curious about who Rebecca’s mystery dating app man is, and of all the people it could be, Sam is by far the most intriguing choice. It’s a shame this relationship doesn’t amount to much else, but at least we get to experience it. Of all the Richmond players, Sam dating Rebecca makes the most sense. He’s sensitive but strong, stands by his morals, and is a genuinely good person, which are qualities that Rebecca deserves, and are all the complete opposite of Rupert.
While we know it’s very unlikely the two will reignite their romance in the upcoming Ted Lasso season 4, as Rebecca reunites with her unexpected fling from Amsterdam in the season 3 finale, this plot twist still deserves more appreciation. Ted Lasso brilliantly throws audiences off with this pairing, but it actually works, and it isn’t just written for the sake of it.
