Only Putin is less popular than this Democrat, polls show: Here’s where Elon Musk ranks

A prominent Democrat is plunging in popularity.More than half of Americans -- 51% -- have an unfavorable view of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York compared to just 23% who view the senator favorably -- a 10% spike in unpopularity since late January, according to an Economist/YouGov poll released Wednesday.Only Elon Musk -- at 55% -- had a worse unfavorable rating than Schumer in the Economist/YouGov poll.In a Harvard University Center for American Politics/Harris poll released earlier this week, Schumer had lower unfavorables than Musk -- 39% to 49% -- but his favorables were also lower -- 26% to 40%.Schumer had a -13% net favorability rating in the Harvard poll, the same percentage as BidenOnly Vladimir Putin, at 13% favorable to 65% unfavorable for a -53% net favorability rating, was more unpopular than Schumer among Americans.Schumer has faced calls to step down from Democrats angry with how he handled a Republican spending bill.Critics say the Senate minority leader has not been aggressive enough in thwarting President Donald Trump’s agenda.While Schumer’s popularity has taken a nosedive, Trump’s numbers are sliding as well.The president had a 50% favorable to 48% unfavorable rating in late January.In mid-April, Trump is now underwater by 11 percentage points. A majority of Americans -- 53% -- have an unfavorable view of the president compared to 42% who view Trump favorably.The Economist/YouGov poll of 1,512 U.S. citizens -- including 1,329 registered voters -- was conducted between April 13 and April 15. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.4 percentage points.
