Mother of young woman, 32, who was killed by a van while out walking with her baby has 'no hate' in her heart for the driver
The mother of a young woman struck and killed by a van while out walking with her baby told mourners at her funeral there ‘is no hate in our hearts’ for the driver.Jodie Mitchell, 32, was knocked down on the Isle of Lewis on February 7 as she and her sister were out with her son James in his pram.Police Scotland said inquiries into the fatal collision which happened on the A858 at North Shawbost on the island remain ongoing.But at the nurse’s funeral this week, her grieving mother Dina extended her thoughts to the driver of the van as she paid tribute to her ‘beautiful Jodie’.She said: ‘I want to say to the person driving the van that day that my anger has subsided and we have no hate in our hearts.‘None of our lives will ever be the same again so we send our love and strength to you and your family also to get through the days and months ahead of what is going to be a terrible time for all of us.‘We are all just human beings trying to be the best that we can be, and we all need to remember that.’ Jodie Mitchell died in hospital shortly after the accident The A858 towards Shawbost, on the Isle of LewisMourners at the island’s Shawbost Free Church also heard how Ms Mitchell was ‘devoted’ to baby James and ‘gave up everything for him, even in her final moments.’Her mother added: ‘Because of that they are still here today, and we are so thankful for that, Jodie’.Ms Mitchell was taken to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway following the collision but died a short time later.Her son, who is believed to have been born in October, and sister were uninjured.The driver of the grey Renault Master panel van was also unhurt.It is understood that Ms Mitchell, who had been a nurse in London before moving back to the Hebrides, was walking along the main road between the villages of Bragar and Shawbost on the island when the accident happened.The tragedy came just four years after her brother Michael, 21, a former fisherman, was found dead in his home in Bragar.Their mother told mourners that their ‘hearts were shattered’ but Ms Mitchel had been ‘reunited’ with her bother and her baby son would ‘always know who his mummy is’.Police Scotland are continuing to investigate the fatal collision, which took place at 4.45pm on February 7.Sergeant Neil Macdonald previously urged anyone driving on the road around the time of the crash to get in touch.He said: ‘Please also check your dash-cams and if you have any footage that could help with our investigation then make contact with officers’.
