‘PM MUST RESIGN!’: NATO Nation On Edge, Protesters TORCH ‘Dialogue’ Chairs Outside Government Office
Albanian protesters have set fire to chairs placed outside Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office as an invitation for dialogue, turning the government’s gesture into a dramatic symbol of rejection. Footage from Tirana shows demonstrators surrounding the chairs before flames engulf them. Protesters say Rama should resign before negotiations begin, as a movement that started with student demands expands into broader anti-government mobilisation. The scenes followed violent clashes a day earlier, when demonstrators threw rocks and fireworks and police responded with tear gas and water cannon. Students have demanded lower education costs and improvements to the system, while wider grievances now include public services, employment and allegations of corruption. Rama has offered dialogue but refuses to step aside. The two sides are therefore increasingly divided over the starting point for any talks: the government wants negotiations with Rama in office; protesters demanding his departure turned his invitation to sit down into fuel for their demonstration.
