CHINA-RUSSIA ‘THREAT’ TO EUROPE? Xi Jinping Fires ‘COLD WAR’ Jibe As EU Attacks Putin | Watch
China has accused the European Union of displaying a “Cold-War mentality” after concerns were raised over Beijing’s growing cooperation with Russia in the Arctic. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said countries have a right to conduct lawful activities in the Arctic and argued that China’s presence is aimed at promoting “peace, stability and sustainable development” in the region. Beijing rejected attempts to frame China-Russia cooperation as a security threat. Mao warned that dividing countries into blocs and “inciting geopolitical confrontation” would not serve peace, stability or development in the Arctic. The remarks underline the growing geopolitical contest surrounding the far north as major powers pay increasing attention to Arctic shipping routes, resources and strategic positioning. China’s message to Europe is that Beijing considers its Arctic activities legitimate under international law and rejects efforts to treat cooperation with Moscow through a Cold War-style bloc framework.
